AB SR RESULTS MEDICINE HAT - DAY 1

By: JP - Jan. 28, 2012

ALBERTA SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

MEDICINE HAT

DAY 1

800 FREE

As we "news flashed" earlier in the day Chelsea Thorne made her Western National Qualifying time by negative splitting her 9:26.68 swim in the timed-final event.

100 BACK

Brooklynn Snodgrass took  more than  a full second off of the "pool" record in this event - winning 1:00.35 while the boys went 1-2-3-4 with Russell Wood winning in 55.87 followed by Adam Maybury, Yuri Kisil and Kyle Beatty.

200 FLY

The boys were up to their podium stealing shenanigans again going 1-2-3 this time in the fly with a close race won by Thomas Jobin in 2:01.98 just ahead of his teammate, Sean Penhale, in 2:02.46 followed by Kevin Nelson in 2:05.05.

100 FREE

Emma Sproule picked up the girls medal with her bronze place finish in 58.66 while out of the "B" final Brooklynn Snodgrass put up a time that would have won the whole event in 56.63 - unfortunately for her though no matter how fast you go in the "B" final you can't finish any higher than 9th. An interesting side-note - that exact scenario played out in the men's 400m freestyle at the 1984 Olympics where the German swimmer in the "B" final went faster than the American in the "A" final - but still finished 9th (albeit with a new Olympic Record).

The boys once again put up another 1-2-3 with Scott McGiilvray leading the way in 50.59 followed by Russell Wood in 51.13 and Adam Maybury in 52.70.

400 IM

14 year old Jessica Warrack was the lone medalist for the Cascade girls picking up bronze in 5:04.17.

On the boys side of the most gruelling event in swimming Sean Penhale was first in 4:23.87 while teammate Kevin Nelson was third in 4:34.78.

50 BREAST

He's more known for his butterfly swims but 18 year old Thomas Jobin got the job done in the 50 with a 30.45 which was good enough for bronze.

4x200 FREE RELAY

The Cascade girls picked up the bronze medal in this one in a time of 8:28.35.

Emma Sproule 2:03.18

Kassi Devolin 2:10.66

Jessica Warrack 2:12.84

Brooklynn Snodgrass 2:01.67

The boys were out leading the field once again placing 1-2 in 7:36.96 and 7:45.77:

Russell Wood 1:53.80

Scott McGillvray 1:53.20

Thomas Jobin 1:54.97

Sean Penhale 1:54.99

Kyle Beatty 1:57.47

Adam Maybury 1:54.65

Kevin Nelson 1:56.27

Connor Bayne 1:57.38
